Gusset | Side vs. Bottom | Eagle Flexible Packaging

Gusset – Side vs. Bottom: What’s the Difference?

If you want to improve your product-to-package ratio, gusseted bags and pouches are a great choice. Compared to lay-flat bagsgusset bags increase filling volume and can hold an increased amount of weight.

In addition, gusset bags are a recommended stand-up packaging option for brands that want more space to display their product’s unique features and nutritional facts.

What is a gusset bag?

We’ve mentioned some of the advantages gusset bags provide, but what exactly are they, anyway?

Without getting too technical, it is essentially material that’s added to a flexible pouch to create more space and strengthen its structure. Typically, it is added to either the sides of a pouch, or, the bottom of a pouch.

Both styles provide brands and consumers with a unique array of advantages and features.

Side gusset bags

Side gusset bags and pouches are less box-shaped, which means they usually take up less space on the shelf. Some would argue, however, that side gusset bags are less aesthetically pleasing as a shelf display. But overall, side gusset bags still provide plenty of canvas space for displaying and marketing your brand – it mostly comes down to personal preference.

Bottom gusset bags

Rather than lying flat, these bags stand upright and tend to be more versatile in terms of size and shape. In other words, not all bottom gusset bags have to be box-shaped. But as mentioned above, the overall size of a bottom gusset bag is often larger, even if they’re holding the same volume of product. If you choose to go with a box pouch style, however, you’ll have four sides available to advertise your product.
